There’s nothing wrong with your home decor, but maybe it could be a little fresher? This week, I’m sharing a super simple project that will help you give you home a little bit of a makeover, while also saving you money.

I love these DIY projects, because they cost way less than the low-quality items from the store, and even though I can’t afford to buy all the items that go into the finished project, I can still make something similar using dollar tree items and a few other supplies I already had on hand. So today I’m going to show you how to make this beautiful tiered tray out of dollar tree items.

Have you ever been to a Dollar Tree? Of course you have, they’re everywhere. They are cheap, convenient, and great for getting a quick decorating job done. They can be tricky, however. You can’t just go in and buy the exact items you see on display at a Dollar Store… you have to get creative and use your own vision for what you can put in your room. Check out this example of the Dollar Tree, as it was used to create this cool tiered tray to hold your favorite snacks and drinks!. DIY Tiered Tray Dollar Tree Craft

As the weather begins to warm, my thoughts begin to wander to all of the great things that summer has to offer. Graduations, graduation parties, bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, and cookouts are all common throughout the summer months. If you don’t already have serving trays, this is a fantastic way to go if you’re organizing one of these events.

The Dollar Tree has everything you need to create this tiered tray.

The following items are required:

  • Pan for Pizza
  • 2 Round Cake Pans
  • 2 glass candlestick holders (or any other tiny glass container) (just make sure both ends are flat)
  • Super Glue or a Hot Glue Gun
  • Painter’s Chalk
  • Brush with a sponge
  • Paintbrush (Fine)
  • Acrylic Paint (Dark)

I had chalk paint on hand, so I used that. If you don’t have any and the Dollar Tree is out, I’ll show you how to create your own using the instructions below.

Steps for Making a Tiered Tray

This multi-tiered dish may be utilized for a variety of occasions throughout the year. Did I mention how much I like items that can be used in a variety of ways? My tiered tray is presently the highlight of my farmhouse table, but this summer I have big ideas for it. I see it being used to store all of the ingredients for s’mores, as well as a variety of other tasty desserts. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather your materials.

One of the most important components of this DIY project is chalk paint, which you should collect or buy for as you gather or shop for your materials. If you don’t have any, this clever hack will allow you to create your own.

How to Make Chalk Paint

You’ll need talc-based baby powder (not cornstarch) and acrylic paint to create chalk paint (which dollar stores sell). 2 teaspoons acrylic paint for every tablespoon of talc powder That is all there is to it. You’re all set to go!

Step 2: Prepare the Area to be Painted

If you’re going to paint something, make sure it’s protected from the paint. So, to prevent any accidents, prepare your place. To shield my table from the paint, I put down some pages from an old newspaper. Set out everything that has to be painted, including the pizza pan, cake pans, and candlestick/glass holders, once your site is ready.

Paint your pans and glass holders in step three.

Now comes the exciting part! Each side of the pans will be painted. You must be patient in order to complete this task correctly. At least two to three coats of paint will be required on each side of the pans.

The tops of the pizza pan, cake pans, and both glass holders should all be painted. Allow for at least an hour of drying time. I attempted to finish a second coat before the hour was up, but I ran into problems, so take your time with this job. You’ll be happy you did.

To prevent my sponge brush from drying out in between applications, I store it in a zipped plastic bag.

Do a second coat on everything once the first coat has dry for an hour. I waited a few hours after the second layer to make sure everything was fully dry before attempting the bottom sides.

When I returned to start painting the bottom sides of the cake pans, I saw that the glass holders were still not completely covered, so I gave them a third coat.

I turned the cake pans over and painted the bottom and sides after finishing the third coat on the holders. I painted, waited an hour, and then gave them a second coat, just like the other side. I let everything rest overnight after painting all of the sides.

Step 4: Measure & Find The Middle

It was time to put everything together once the painted pans had rested overnight. Before I firmly bonded anything together, I took care to measure and locate the center of all the pans. You’ll know precisely where you’ll glue the parts together and that everything will line up and not appear off-centered if you do it this way.

I did this using a pencil and my son’s small measuring tape. I drew the center with my pencil and then placed the glass holder on top to ensure that both sides had the same amount of space.

Step 5: Glue it all together.

It’s time to get out the glue now that you’ve indicated where you’ll glue! I used a hot glue gun, but super glue would also work.

Pro Tip: If you just want a temporary decoration and aren’t sure where you’ll keep it, I recommend using a hot glue gun. Use super glue for a more lasting grip if you intend on using the tray often and have the room to keep it.

I began at the bottom and worked my way to the top. I applied glue to the circle I’d penciled onto the pizza pan and positioned my glass holder on top of it. Apply mild pressure to the glue and hold for a minute to ensure that it sets.

After that, I glued a ring of hot glue on the top of my glass holder and used the circle I drew on the bottom of the cake pan as a guide to place it on top of the glass holder. Rep until all of the steps have been completed.

Set something with a good amount of weight on top after everything has been cemented together to provide mild pressure until it dries fully.

Add Distressed Accents in Step 6

When you’re certain that everything is in place and dried, dry brush a dark accent color around the borders with a flat tip, tiny paintbrush. Dry brushing is the term for this method.

Dry brushing is a technique that involves dipping the tip of your brush in paint, removing some of it on a scrap piece of paper, and then gently brushing around the borders to create a distressed appearance. The brush is never moist. Just keep doing it till you’re done. The best thing about this stage is that you can’t go wrong! You may distress as much or as little as you like!

Once you’ve done painting, let it dry.

Step 7: Put Your Dollar Store DIY Tiered Tray on Display

It’s time to put your tiered tray on display! Find a beautiful spot in your house and decorate it with accessories, or purchase some delicious treats and fill it with them.

I decided to put my Dollar Store DIY Mason Jar Succulent Planter on display. It was a great match.
