There is a lot of talk these days about the right way to do business and the wrong ways to do business. The former is based on ethics and the latter is based on greed. It’s a good thing that these two not in sync.
Itching your left thumb or ring finger means money is coming to you, according to research published in the journal, Hand, Brain and Mouth. For the study, researchers from the University of Turku, Finland, found that left-handed people who experience chronic left-hand itching have a higher chance of making money. The researchers concluded that left-hand itching could be a sign of money coming to left-handed people.
All our lives we are surrounded by superstitious beliefs. From breaking mirrors to wearing a rabbit’s foot, some of these superstitions bring bad luck and others bring good fortune. When it comes to money, we’d all like to be a little more lucky. When I was a kid, I learned an auspicious omen: Itching in your left hand means money is about to come into your life.

What does itching palms mean? (medical reason)
According to a 2019 YouGov study, only about one in four Americans believes in superstitions, most of whom are between the ages of 25 and 34. If you’re not a superstitious person, itching on your hands can just be itching. According to Healthline, itchy palms can also be a sign of illness:
- Dry skin
- skin damage
- Allergy
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Diabetes
But if your left (or right) palm is itchy and you’re spiritual, it could mean something completely different. In different cultures around the world, scratching one palm symbolizes that you will make money, and the other palm symbolizes that you will lose money.
What does it mean when my left hand itches?
According to my wise young mother, just because your left hand itches you will have money soon. The left is to receive, the right is to give. The happiness you receive can come in many forms and amounts. You can find a shiny coin on the ground or win a billion dollars in the lottery. A dresser you’re trying to sell online may suddenly be on sale tomorrow, or you may get an unexpected promotion at work. The possibilities are endless if you believe. 
Of course, I wouldn’t be changing my life anytime soon because I hope to make money from an itchy left palm, but for some, this crazy superstition has come in handy. The story of Maria Shammas is an example. In 2010, Mary Shammas earned $64 million. She was taking the bus to Brooklyn, New York, when her left arm began to itch. So she got off the bus and went to buy a lottery ticket. Her left palm itched so badly she knew it had to mean something, and she was right! That night she became a millionaire. According to Fox News, she won with her favorite lottery numbers (5, 14, 17, 19, 24 and 25). On the other hand, my mother also made me realize that the happy hand is different for everyone. To find out which of the two you have, keep an eye on what happens in the days after the start of the itchy palms. It is also believed that you should let someone scratch your lucky palm with the other hand to boost your luck. That is, if your left hand itches, ask someone to scratch it with your right hand. Before he became famous, actor Jim Carrey wrote a $10 million check for himself for his acting skills and dated it 10 years later. Guess what happened ten years later? What does it mean when my right hand itches?
So if the left hand is a happy symbol, the itch in the right hand is an unhappy symbol. An itchy right palm may symbolize that you are about to lose money. This can happen when a bill needs to be paid or a new expense is unexpected. This means your car could suddenly fail or your fridge could stop working and you’d have to call a technician to fix it (ha! sorry, I’m not very funny). Either way, an itchy right hand means financial bad luck, unless it’s your money hand. This is a good time to point out the importance of setting aside money for such an occasion. It’s easy to start budgeting and saving for emergencies.
What does mental itching mean?
From a religious point of view, there is also something good in this superstition. As for itchy hands, the Bible says this: But when you give to one in need, your left hand will not know what your right hand is doing. – (Matthew 6:3 New International Version (NIV)). We may conclude that the right hand gives and the left receives; but another passage may be explained in the opposite direction: For I am the LORD your God, who takes you by the right hand, and says to you, Don’t be afraid, I will help you! – (Isaiah 41:13 New International Version (NIV)). Perhaps the right hand is both giving and receiving? An itch in the right hand can mean the chance to get money, but also to give money as a favor. But the left hand can mean losing money or giving money, but not in the charitable sense. In Hindu religion, the goddess Lakshmi symbolizes happiness, wealth, fertility and prosperity. If your left palm itches, the Indians think the goddess is leaving you. So: right hand to receive, left hand to give. but the direction of the itching of the left hand for the womanis different. It is said that an itchy left palm brings good luck, while an itchy right hand means a woman will lose money. These are some of the lucky figurines in my house. I have heard of many financial superstitions in my culture, from strange practices to omens and dreams. Here are a few more that have to do with money:
1. Putting the handbag on the ground
It’s considered bad luck to put your bag on the ground, and you lose money if you do. Don’t forget that soil is full of germs! When you put your money in such a place, you signal to the universe that you don’t care.
2. Bird shit – good luck
I don’t know why, but I grew up thinking that a bird pooping on you brings good luck and money. I think I’ll just ignore the bird poop! But if a bird shits on me, I might be inclined to take the risk.
3. Penny on the ground
If you find a penny (or any other coin on the ground) lying face up, you should pick it up and put it in your pocket for good luck. However, if you find a coin with the number facing up, you should immediately pass it to someone for good luck.
